Although my husband and I love our first home, we finally decided that we needed to buy larger house for our family. We put our house on the market and started looking at homes right away. We were very excited when we put our first offer on a home. We thought everything would play out smoothly. Little did we know, however, that God was going to teach us a lot before our transition to a new home.
We received three very low offers on our house and started getting very discouraged. On top of that we lost the contract on the house that we had put an offer on. Again, we started looking at homes with the hope that our house would sell. We kept finding homes we really liked, but we didn’t want to put down an offer until we had a contract on our own home first.
Finally, the day came when our phone rang, and we were told we had gotten an offer. After lots of negotiating, we finally agreed on a price. We were confident that the buyer would come through, so we started the house hunt again. We put a few offers down on several houses, but they were not accepted. My husband and I were crushed. We didn’t understand God’s reasoning.
Why would He give us a desire for a new home but not come through with one? So after being turned down on the first set of homes, we started all over again with the house hunt. Our realtor pulled up a list of possible houses, and we all piled into the car to look at them. After looking at about twenty houses, we decided to stop for lunch. We sat down, ordered and when the food got there, I said, “I want to pray over our meal.”
Now, those of you who know me, know that I am not really comfortable praying in public. So my husband and realtor both looked at me in surprise. I prayed over the food and then asked God to please show us our dream house. I asked Him to let us know from the moment we walked in the door which house was meant for us.
After lunch we continued our search, and the third house was the one. As soon as the realtor opened the front door, my husband and I were both thrilled. It was perfect, and we loved it immediately. So what was God teaching us? We needed to seek Him first, and He would provide our every wish and desire according to His will!
“He fulfills the desires of those who fear him, he hears their cry and saves them.”
– Psalm 145:19 (NIV)
“Father, help me to seek Your will first before I strive for the desires of my heart. Make sure that my wants are aligned with Your wants for me. I want to find Your approval in everything I do. Help me now while I’m considering…”
